Keep riding with regular at-home mountain bike maintenance

Your mountain bike gets off the pavement – and gets dusty, muddy and wet in the process. Mountain Bike Insurance is extra protection in case of an unforeseen accident or theft, but maintaining your bike regularly keeps it running smoothly in the meantime.

Here are some basic mountain bike care steps to keep your trail-blazer in tip-top shape:

1. Keep your cycle dry:Your mountain bike will get wet on muddy trails when you bike in rainy weather, and if you decide to cross a small creek or brook while you're out. When you're done with your ride, take the time to dry your bicycle, protecting it from rust and wear

2. Clean your bike regularly: Your bike will work much more easily when it is clean. Built-up lubricant on the chain and muddy residue in the gears can take their toll on your bike's performance. Take your bicycle apart to clean the various parts with soapy water and a gentle towel or brush; dry each part as you go.

3. Examine your cycle for wear: Has the chain over-stretched? Are your brake pads still in good shape? Are the tyres over-worn? Checking these parts regularly and replacing or repairing them as necessary will keep your mountain bike in great shape for longer.

4. Optimise your bicycle for performance: Ensure that your bike is at its best by maintaining it regularly. Center your wheels and keep close watch on your cables and housings, as problems with these often cause shifting issues.

Claims for bicycles more than three years old are subject to a 10% deduction for depreciation each year, and there is no liability cover included – see our Key Exclusions and Conditions for more information. For cover to apply, you must comply with our specific Security Requirements.
