If you’re thinking of getting a dog, there are a lot of things to consider. Possibly the most vital thing is whether you have the time to invest in looking after a pet. Dogs need exercise every day, and correctly training and housebreaking a dog can take a lot of patience and time.
If you know you are responsible enough to care for a dog, you then have to decide which type you wish to own. There are lots of things that can affect your choice – you may have a young family, and so want a breed that is good around children. You may want a dog that is loyal and will protect your property. You may even wish to get a rescue dog. All of these options have inherent pros and cons, but one issue that does not occur to potential owners is that of cost.
Looking after a dog in the proper way can cost a lot of money, and you should be aware of the outlay involved. A new study has compiled a list of the most expensive and most cost effective breeds to own.
At the top of the list are Whippets. Every year, a Whippet owner spends an average of £4,632 on vet’s bills, food, grooming, treats and kennel visits. Over the course of the average lifespan of the breed, this amounts to an eye watering £66,236.
In contrast, the average owner of a Jack Russell can expect to shell out £1,517 every year.
The study found that 33 per cent of dog owners were surprised by the total cost of looking after their pet, whilst an amazing 38 per cent had not taken out any dog insurance. This is all the more surprising considering the amount the average owner can expect to pay for the health and wellbeing of their pet and the range of cheap insurance for dogs available on the market.
Considering how expensive vets’ fees can be, it is remarkable that many dogs and pets remain uninsured. The dog’s health is the most important thing, more so that the latest dog treats and accessories, and so dog lovers should invest in their pet’s insurance . |
