According to Skyscanner's March update, the Scotland-based online flight search engine, Spain remains the most appealing Easter holiday destination in Europe for UK travellers. New York is also becoming increasingly popular, while Istanbul and Marrakech are on the rise. For the second year running, Malaga, Spain is the most searched for Easter flight destination among European cities. For the first time, New York has risen to become the fifth most popular search by UK travellers. Barry Smith, Skyscanner Co-founder and Business Development Director explained: "Spain's long domination over the British tourist market may be on the wane. Whilst it's still the most popular country for an Easter break, it seems to be falling from favour." "New York has risen massively and we're seeing less well known destinations such as Marrakech and Istanbul rise in popularity. UK destinations are also faring well with three in the top 20, suggesting the 'staycation' trend is alive and well." With the popularity of the euro set to continue, UK travellers see the Eurozone has their favourite destination. According to a report published by the The Post Office Travel Money, their research shows that euro continues to be the best selling foreign currency last year. The same research also concludes that prices for tourist items in Spain have dropped by 30 per cent, therefore, those who intend to go there will be able to have a stronger purchasing power than before. In terms of ‘staycation' within the country, London remains the top choice, although some travellers may have been lured to go abroad, in view of the first national rail strike threat to hit Britain for the past 16 years. Moreover, some Easter holidaymakers may have their travelling plans affected by the recently announced airline strikes. Procuring valid travel insurance can help air passengers deal with the unnecessary expenses arising from the last-minute itinerary changes, delays or disruptions. More importantly, insurance claim for medical expenses while one is on a journey is another factor that should be considered, especially for those travelling to a long haul or unfamiliar destination. |
