Protect your bubble top tips for keeping your bike safe

At Protect your bubble we understand the importance of keeping your bike safe and protected which is why our bicycle insurance starts from just £1.99 per month.

Whether you use your bike for pleasure, to stay fit, to save money or to commute to work, don’t let a thief spoil your fun. When you insure your bicycle with Protect your bubble you can be certain of getting a great deal as well as comprehensive cover and we always recommend you read your terms and conditions for information on how to keep your bike secure and your bicycle insurance valid.

These are our three top tips:

How to store your bike at home

If you are storing your bicycle at an insured location, such as a house or a flat you need to make sure your bicycle is kept inside and is secured with an approved lock.  If your bike is kept in a shed or garage the external doors must be secured by a 5 lever mortice deadlock to BS3621 standard or a 5 lever padlock and you should secure your bike through the frame by an approved lock to an immovable object inside the building.

How to protect your bike whilst out and about

Second top tip to protect against accidental damage and theft are firstly to never leave your bike unattended and if you do have to leave it unattended, always remember to secure it to an immovable object, by an approved lock, through the frame. You should also never leave your bike at a train station for more than 24 hours because it will invalidate your insurance.

Leaving your bike in or on a car

It’s important to protect your bike, especially when it is stored in or on the roof rack of a car. For example, if your bike is stolen whilst in or on a car, your bicycle insurance will only cover you if you take certain precautions.

If your bike is left inside a car, the doors, windows and boot must always be locked and any alarm should be switched on. The bicycle should, where possible be stored out of sight or if it is outside the car on the roof rack, for example, it should be secured by an approved lock through the frame to the roof rack.

If your bike is going to be left overnight on or in a car, you need to make sure that the vehicle is fitted with either a Thatcham category 1 alarm/immobiliser, a category 2 immobiliser or a category 3 steering lock. If you are overseas, where it may be impossible to comply with the Thatcham security requirements, if your bicycle is stolen, it will be covered if the vehicle is fitted with a factory fitted alarm or immobiliser and you are able to produce evidence to show this in the event that you need to make a claim. For full information on approved security systems please read the Protect your bubble Bicycle insurance terms and conditions which can be found under the important information section on the bicycle insurance pages.

Before you leave your bicycle on top of or inside a car, always check that the car is taxed and insured and all windows and locks are in good working order.

If you are travelling abroad with your bike, Protect your bubble Adventure Bicycle Insurance covers you for Europe.
