Some people think that a combination of DIY holidays and travel insurance means complexity and high cost. Rest assured, for us nothing is further from the truth!
DIY Holidays Versus Packaged Deals
Some of us prefer to have things organised for us down to more-or-less the last detail. If you are the sort of person who doesn't like the hassle of making arrangements and sorting things out, then paying one price to one company to ‘do it all for you' has its attractions.
This is, essentially, the packaged holiday. Usually this involves going to a travel agent then selecting and paying for a holiday. This holiday typically comprises a package that includes just about everything you'll need such as flights, ferries, hotel accommodation, car hire and so on.
The DIY holiday is something different and may suit those who prefer to be slightly more independent. The DIY holiday is virtually impossible to concisely describe because it can cover just about anything you wish it to! The key point is that if you start with some idea of the holiday you're looking for, then from that point on you'll have to do everything yourself. That may include booking flights, taxi transfers, ferry crossings and reserving hotels.
Whatever holiday type you choose, making sure that you have appropriate insurance in place may be critically important - whether you're travelling abroad or choose to have your holiday within the UK.
Travel insurance - the realities
In life, things can go wrong for any of us and at any time. If you're unlucky and suffer misfortune while travelling, the inconvenience, costs and traumas can be extremely upsetting. This may involve sickness or injury, getting involved in a situation that may require legal assistance (e.g. after a car accident), finding that your holiday has been cancelled, the collapse of a travel company or airline, a loss of luggage in transit and so on.
The above incidents could mean that you will either be digging very deep into your financial reserves to meet the costs or perhaps adversely affect your finances in the long term. In such situations packaged or DIY holidays and travel insurance may be best seen as going hand-in-hand.
It's perhaps well worth remembering also that this isn't just an issue when travelling overseas. If holidaying in the UK, your holiday could be cancelled due to illness or the financial collapse of a holiday company just as easily as it could be overseas. You may also find that the possibility of your luggage getting lost while travelling internally within the UK may be just as high as on an international journey.
