Samsung Galaxy S9 – Worth an upgrade?

Maybe it’s just me, but didn’t the early buzz around the Galaxy S9 and S9+ seem a little less *buzzy* than usual?

Yes, the handset looks almost identical to the S8. And yes, some of the improvements sound incremental rather than game-changing. But the proof is always in the pudding, and judging by the positive hands-on reviews so far, the new Samsung flagship smartphone is one tasty dish.

If you’re considering an upgrade (you lucky thing), here are some interesting features that might help you make up your mind:

Improved camera

Samsung S9 better photos

One of the main selling points is the impressive new camera, which Samsung say adapts to different lighting ‘like the human eye’. Bold claim!

The main camera is the same on both devices, boasting a dual aperture it automatically swaps between to get you the best possible photos, whatever the weather. Oh, and the S9+ also has a dual lens to help you capture great shots at long distances. Nifty.

Super slow-mo video recording

You might’ve seen some clips of this in action online, but you need to see it in person to appreciate the quality of the output.

It’s crazy how much cooler everything looks in slow-mo. Even things that are normally boring become wind-swept and epic with just a quick tap of a finger. Putting on your jacket? An uneventful part of your day, right? NOT ANYMORE.

In slow-mo, you’re pretty much Jay Z, adjusting your lapel and nodding to security as you confidently enter a nightclub. That’s what we call a game-changer.

AR Emoji

AR Emoji

Pronounced ‘ay-are’ and *not* the pirate way, sadly. AR Emoji is Samsung's answer to iPhone's Animoji feature. Just take a selfie and the S9 magically conjures a tiny 3D avatar of you.

Watch in awe as your little doppelganger mimics your facial expressions while you take snapshots to share with your pals. Pretty cool.

Some people love it, others refuse to acknowledge the existence of their animated self because they don't think it ‘actually’ looks like them (hint: it does).

Samsung is also adding Mickey Mouse and a host of other Disney/Pixar characters into the mix very soon. Oh boy!

Surround sound stereo speakers

Samsung Surround Sound

Quite literally music to our ears. The new speakers provide more volume and better sound quality than the S8. Perfect for when you’re on the go or shuffling around the house listening to Whitney. Bit of a double-edged sword though.

On one hand, you can still hear that absolute banger blaring from the living room when you go to make a cup of tea. On the other, the kids on the top deck of the E9 to Ealing Broadway *could* turn it down a touch, or at least choose a song with less swearwords and more Paul Simon. Swings and roundabouts.
