Blue Monday

What is Blue Monday and how did it become such an welcomed date in the diary? Well back in 2005 the concept was developed by Sky Travel who claimed they had a formula that could accurately predict the most depressing day of the year. Since then the formula has been tweaked and you can see the 2009 version below. Blue Monday tends to be the 3rd Monday in January but on rare occasions it has been the second or the last Monday in January.

The first blue Monday was declared in a Sky Travel press release as the 24th January 2005. Since then Blue Monday has really taken off and tends to be the no.1 trending topic on twitter on the day. This year Blue Monday will fall on 18th January.

The 2009 formula that can work out the most depressing day of the year

The 2009 formula that can work out the most depressing day of the year

[W = (D-d)] x Tq / Mx N1

W=weather, d=debt, T=time since Christmas, Q = time since failing our New Year's resolutions, M = low motivational levels, Na = low motivational levels.

So why is Blue Monday so blue?

Well the equation takes a lot of different circumstances into account. Firstly most people tend to get paid early for Christmas so by the time the 3rd Monday of January rolls around most people have gone 6 weeks without pay. On top of this credit card bills tend to have been received and payments due which can make January a dark month to say the least. Other aspects taken into account are lack of sunlight and low levels of vitamin D, failed New Year’s resolutions and poor motivational levels.
