Turn off Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi uses heavy battery life even if it’s not connected as it’s constantly searching for a new connection. To switch it off go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Off. Be sure to turn it back on when you are using it as it’s faster than the standard 3G connection.
Turn off Bluetooth
Bluetooth should always be turned off unless you’re using it for file transfer via Bluetooth or with a Bluetooth headset. This can be done via Settings > General > Bluetooth > Off.
Turn off 3G
Switching 3G off defaults to EDGE or GPRS connection; this is slow but still enables your apps to connect online. 3G however consumes more energy and therefore should be turned off when fast speed is not required or when not in use. Go to Settings > Network > Switch off ‘Enable 3G’.
Reduce iPhone’s display brightness
You don’t always need a bright screen (unless you’re always in the dark). You can set this to automatic or manually reduce the backlit brightness of your iPhone’s screen. Simply go to Settings > Brightness > reduce brightness by sliding the bar to your left or slide it to the middle if you’re not sure. Switch Auto-Brightness on after that. Your iPhone is smart enough to work out the rest.
Disable location services
Location Services uses either your Wi-Fi or 3G connection to determine your approximate location draining more energy from your battery. Go to Settings > Location Services > Slide to ‘off’ for as many apps as possible.
Disable push notification services
iPhone apps that support push notifications send you news and updates straight to your main screen, which causes your iPhone to consume battery power faster.
Go to Settings > Notifications > Select the apps one-by-one and turn ‘off’ push notifications. Do it for as many apps as possible.
Lock iPhone
This one’s a no brainer. If you lock your iPhone the screen will turn off and go into sleep mode saving you more battery power. This can be done simply by pressing the button on the top right side of your iPhone. If you have a habit of forgetting to do this, you can enable the auto lock function. Go to Settings > General > Auto-lock > 1 Minute.
Auto adjust-time (based on time zone)
iPhones with iOS 5 (or later versions) use the auto-adjust feature to automatically update the time. This is done through any data connection or directly through your mobile network operator. Chances are your time does not change regularly (unless you’re on a cruise ship or world tour) so you can save some power by turning this off. This can be turned off through Settings > Location Services > System Services (scroll right down to the bottom) > Setting Time Zone ‘Off’.
Urgently need to save power?
Have you ever been in a situation where your iPhone battery is running really low and you desperately need to save power? If you’re not expecting an important call, the quickest way to reduce battery consumption is to switch it to flight mode through Settings > Flight Mode ‘On’. This will turn off all signals including 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, EDGE, GPRS and even your main network signal.
Run a full charge cycle at least once per month
Some of us may be guilty of sticking the iPhone on charge when the battery is in fact not running low and taking it off charge when the iPhone is not fully charged. This effects its long term life as it’s a lithium rechargeable battery. Giving it a full charge cycle (at least once a month) by letting the battery drain completely and charging it fully would give your battery proper maintenance.
