5 free must-have apps for Summer '18

Robert Duke

Let's face it - we’re all excited about summer. Whether you’re staying in the UK or going abroad this year; make the most of the sunny season with these free apps.

1. UVLens – UV Index (Android and iOS)

Okay, so the weather in the UK can be a bit hit-and-miss. It’s still important to protect your skin throughout summer. Just ask Baz Luhrmann.

Wherever you are, the UVLens app lets you know when it’s safe to be outside and pops up with reminders when you need to reapply your sunscreen. A bit like a digital version of my mum.

2. PackPoint (Android and iOS)

Most people stress about packing for holidays (though I’ve met a few masochists who enjoy trying to fit 18 pairs of flip-flops into an unreceptive carry-all. Each to their own).

PackPoint is for those in the former category. Simply tell the app what kind of trip you’re taking (hiking, skiing, working, travelling with a baby etc.) and it’ll make a customisable checklist for you. Handy!

Note to all dads - PackPoint won’t advise you to leave behind the thick white socks you plan to wear with leather sandals, so allow me: put those abominations in the bin and never speak or think of them ever again.

3. Grill King (Android and iOS)

If, like me, you’ve never cooked a BBQ without strict parental supervision, Grill King could be your summer savior.

It’s easy to lose track of things when people are hovering with intent and this app allows you to set multiple overlapping timers – so you can focus on the real reason you purloined the revered spatula in the first place: the unmissable opportunity to look commanding and serious in the presence of burnt corn.

4.  Field Trip (Android and iOS)

Now, this is cool. Download Field Trip and, as you wander around new places trying to find your bearings, it’ll act like the world’s most accommodating tour guide and notify you whenever you’re near something interesting. Thanks Field Trip!

In bigger cities and tourist hotspots, you’ll get info about local history, landmarks, and also the best places for shopping, eating, and general galavanting. Worth a look.

5. School Countdown (Android and iOS)

It’s great to spend time with the whole family over the summer, but once in a while, it’s nice to be able to check the exact number of minutes and seconds until the little ones return to school.

Just because you love them so much and you want to know exactly how much time you have left to enjoy.. NO. PUT THAT DOWN BILLY - AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD JESSICA, I’VE TOLD YOU A THOUSAND TIMES: STOP CHEWING THE COFFEE TABLE.
